EV chargers from Newpower

A 7 kW home charger adds roughly 25 to 30 miles of range an hour, so a typical car fills overnight inside a cheap-rate window on a smart tariff. We fit the myenergi Zappi and Hanchu chargers as standard, and other makes such as Ohme and Hypervolt on request.

Fitted and certified by Newpower.

Unlike solar and batteries, EV chargers carry VAT at 20%, and our quotes include it. Every install comes with a Part P certificate and is notified to the network operator for you. If you have solar panels or are thinking about it, we set the charger up to use your surplus first. You do not need solar to make a charger worthwhile.

What a charger costs to fit

From £1,295 fitted, VAT included

That is the charger and a standard install, at a fixed price you can order online. What moves it is the run from your incoming supply to where the car sits, whether it goes on a garage or outbuilding, and whether the supply needs the network operator telling. The shop asks about those before you pay, so the figure does not move on the day.

EV chargers carry VAT at 20%, and our prices include it. On grants: if you own a house with its own driveway there is no longer one, whatever you read elsewhere. There are schemes worth £500 for renters, flat owners, landlords and houses with only on-street parking, and we will tell you if you qualify rather than leaving you to find out.

Charged at home overnight, it is the cheapest fuel your car will ever use.

A charger on an off-peak tariff fills the car for a fraction of what the pumps cost. The job is a half-day if the supply is right, and we tell you before you order if it is not.

  • Charger mounted on a brick or block wall within 10 metres of your incoming supply
  • Cable clipped or run in trunking, and one wall penetration
  • A small consumer unit of its own for the charger circuit, so your existing board is not touched
  • Open-PEN protection, built into the charger or fitted with it, so no earth rod
  • Wi-Fi or 4G set-up and the charger app on your phone
  • Smart tariff pairing, for example Intelligent Octopus Go
  • DNO notification and Part P electrical certificate
  • Our workmanship warranty on top of the manufacturer's charger warranty

What we fit, in the order we reach for it

We choose equipment we can get parts and support for locally. If you have a brand in mind, ask; if it is good we will fit it.

How it works.

From enquiry to handover, and who does what.

  1. Step 1 · Before you book

    Photo survey

Send us photos of your consumer unit, meter and the wall you want the charger on. For most homes that is enough to confirm the standard install price without a visit.

  2. Step 2 · Once we have your photos

    Written quote and date

You get the installed price, VAT included, and pick an install date. Anything outside the standard install (a long run, a consumer unit upgrade) is priced in writing first.

  3. Step 3 · Before the install

    DNO notification

We tell the network operator a charger is being added. Homes with a looped supply or a small fuse sometimes need an upgrade, which the DNO does free in most cases.

  4. Step 4 · A few hours on site

    Install

Our electrician runs the cable, mounts the charger, adds the circuit and tests everything. You are shown the app and the tariff schedule before we leave.

  5. Step 5 · After the install

    Certificates

Part P certificate and the charger warranty registration emailed to you. Keep them: they are needed if you sell the house.

Questions we get asked.

How much does an EV charger installation cost?

From £1,295 for the charger and a standard install, VAT at 20% included, and you can order it online at that fixed price. That covers a charger on a wall within 10 metres of your incoming supply, with its own small consumer unit. Longer runs and extra walls are priced in the shop before you pay; a garage, an outbuilding or an underground duct is priced in writing from your photos before the day.

Are there any grants for home chargers?

The OZEV grant for owner-occupied houses with a driveway ended in 2022. The EV chargepoint grant still pays 75% of the cost up to £500 for renters, flat owners, homes with on-street parking, and landlords, and it runs to 31 March 2027. We will tell you if you qualify and claim it as part of the install.

Which charger should I pick?

If you are on or moving to Intelligent Octopus Go and have no solar, the Ohme is the simplest. If you have solar, the Zappi diverts your surplus into the car and the Hypervolt does the same with a neater look. All three are 7 kW, OZEV-approved and work with any car with a Type 2 socket.

Do I need an earth rod?

No. All three chargers we fit have built-in open-PEN protection, which is the modern alternative to an earth rod for homes on a PME supply. It saves digging up the garden and is the method the wiring regulations now expect.

Can I charge from my solar panels?

Yes, with a Zappi or Hypervolt. A CT clamp on your meter tail tells the charger how much you are exporting and it charges the car with that surplus. In summer many customers do most of their charging this way. A battery and a charger can share the surplus, and we set the priority to suit you.

Will my fuse cope?

Most homes on a 100 A main fuse are fine. Homes with a 60 A fuse, a looped supply shared with a neighbour, or an older consumer unit may need an upgrade. The photo survey catches this, and the DNO usually upgrades the fuse and cut-out free of charge.
