myenergi Zappi chargers

The Zappi is the charger to have if you own solar panels, because it will fill the car on your own surplus rather than buying the power back.

Why people ask for myenergi by name

Most home chargers are a switch with an app on it. The Zappi is the one that watches what your solar is exporting and diverts it into the car instead, which on a sunny Saturday is the difference between charging for nothing and charging at the import rate.

It is made in Stallingborough in Lincolnshire, about ninety minutes up the road, which means parts and support are domestic and the company is not going to vanish. myenergi also make the eddi, which does the same trick with your hot water cylinder, and the two talk to each other and share the surplus sensibly.

If you have no solar and no intention of getting any, the diversion is a feature you will not use, and a simpler charger will do the core job for less. You still need a charger though. Anybody running an electric car off a three-pin lead in the hall is doing it the slow, expensive and less safe way, and that is worth fixing whether or not there is anything on the roof.

  • Diverts surplus solar into the car instead of exporting it
  • Three charging modes, so you can force a full charge when you need one
  • Made in Lincolnshire, with UK parts and support
  • Works with the eddi hot water diverter on the same surplus

The full myenergi range

We fit the whole myenergi range, tethered and untethered, in every cable length and colour they make, plus the eddi and the libbi that work alongside it.

The honest verdict

Why we fit a lot of them

  • The surplus diversion is the real thing, not a marketing feature
  • British-made with support you can ring
  • Plays nicely with an existing array whoever installed it
  • Three modes, so you are never stuck waiting for sunshine when you need to leave

What to weigh up

  • With no solar and no plans for it, you are paying for a diversion feature you will not use; a simpler charger does the core job for less
  • It is a chunkier unit than some of the minimal-looking alternatives
  • Getting the best out of it means setting it up properly, which we do at handover rather than leaving you the manual
  • EV chargers carry VAT at 20%, unlike solar and batteries, and our prices include it

Questions we get asked about myenergi

Does the Zappi really charge from solar?

Yes. A clamp on your incoming supply tells it how much you are exporting, and it puts that into the car instead. In eco+ mode it will pause when a cloud comes over and pick up again afterwards.

Is a Zappi worth it if I have no solar?

The charger is worth it either way: if you have an electric car you want a proper wall unit on a cheap overnight tariff, not an extension lead. What you would not be using is the solar diversion, so if there is no array and no plan for one, a simpler charger costs less and charges the car just as fast. If panels are on the list for the next couple of years, buy the Zappi now and it is ready when they go up.

Will it work with my existing solar?

Yes, whoever fitted it and whatever inverter you have. The Zappi measures at the meter rather than talking to the inverter, so it does not care about the brand.

Tethered or untethered?

Tethered for most people, because the cable is always there and it is one less thing in the boot. Untethered if you have two cars with different connectors or you want the wall to look tidier.

Do I get a grant?

Only if you are a flat owner or in rented accommodation; the grant for houses with a driveway ended some years ago. We will tell you which applies before you order rather than after.
