Home air conditioning from Newpower

Most of the domestic air conditioning we fit goes into one of three rooms: a south-facing bedroom that will not cool down at night, a loft conversion that bakes from May to September, or a home office you sit in all day. A single split unit fixes all three, and because it is a heat pump it also heats that room in winter for a fraction of the cost of a plug-in heater.

We fit Mitsubishi Electric, Midea and Daikin wall units, sized for the room rather than the biggest thing in the van. Newpower is REFCOM registered (REF1023574). A fixed system in your home is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027. We fit anywhere in the country. If you want to heat the whole house rather than one room, air source heat pump installation is usually the better answer, and offices and shops are covered under commercial air conditioning.

A bedroom, a loft conversion or a home office is usually one indoor unit, one outdoor unit and a short pipe run. The price moves with the wall, the height and how far the condenser has to sit from the room. We will tell you on the phone if it is straightforward.

Questions we get asked.

How much is air conditioning for one bedroom?

It is the cheapest job on our books, priced per room with no VAT on it until March 2027, for a wall unit sized to the room with the outdoor unit directly behind it. A longer pipework run or a ground-level outdoor unit adds to that, and we price it in writing after the survey.

Will the outdoor unit annoy the neighbours?

Domestic outdoor units run at roughly 45 to 50 dB(A) at one metre and are placed away from bedroom windows. We choose the position with you at the survey.

Do I need planning permission?

A single unit on most houses is permitted development. Flats, listed homes and conservation-area walls facing a road are the exceptions; we check before quoting.

How much does it cost to run?

A bedroom unit cooling overnight uses a couple of kilowatt-hours, so it costs pennies rather than pounds at today's prices. In heating mode it produces roughly three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity it draws.

Can I use it as my main heating?

For the room it is in, yes, and it is one of the cheapest ways to heat an extension, loft room or garage office. For a whole house on radiators, see our air-to-water heat pumps, which qualify for the £7,500 grant.

Is there VAT or a grant?

No VAT on a fixed system in your home until 31 March 2027; HMRC treats a fixed air conditioning unit as an air source heat pump. On the grant: There is a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air heat pumps, which is what fixed air conditioning is, but nobody can claim it yet. It has to go through an installer certified by MCS for air-to-air, and no installer can be certified until the certification bodies are accredited, so not one voucher had been issued by the end of August 2026. When it opens it will only apply to a home where the new system fully replaces the gas, oil, LPG or electric heating; adding cooling to a house that keeps its boiler will not qualify. Ask us and we will tell you where it stands.
