About the grant
What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The government grant towards a heat pump in England and Wales: £7,500 for an air source heat pump, or £9,000 until 31 March 2027 where a home off the gas grid is switching from oil or LPG. The installer applies and takes it off the price. The full detail is in our grant guide.
Why does an existing heat pump or biomass boiler rule me out?
The grant is for replacing fossil fuel or electric heating. A home already heated by a heat pump or a biomass boiler is not switching away from either. The next step for those homes is solar panels and a battery, which make the electricity a heat pump runs on.
Do I need an EPC?
Not any more. Since April 2026 a valid EPC is no longer required to apply, though if you have one, its number goes on the application.
Is this answer final?
No. It is a first check. The system has to be designed to heat the whole house, and Ofgem checks every application, including that the address has not had the grant before and is not a new home bought from a developer (self-builds are fine). We confirm it all at the visit.
