Ideal heat pumps

Ideal has been making boilers in Hull since 1906, and the Logic Air is what happens when that company builds a heat pump.

Why people ask for Ideal Heating by name

Most people in South Yorkshire have had an Ideal boiler at some point without knowing it. The company has been making them in Hull since 1906, and that history is the reason the Logic Air is worth looking at: the parts network and the technical line were already there before the heat pump existed.

The Logic Air is an R32 monobloc, which puts it in the mainstream of what the industry fits. It will not carry the flow temperature a propane unit will, so on a solid-walled Victorian terrace with small radiators it is the wrong tool. On a house built after about 1990, or one that has had the insulation and the radiators sorted, it does the job for less money.

We fit these where the heat loss survey says the house does not need the headroom a Vaillant buys you. Paying for 75°C capability on a house that will never run above 50°C is money in the wrong place.

  • Built in the UK, by a company that has been here since 1906
  • R32 monobloc, the mainstream choice for a modern or upgraded home
  • MCS listed and eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant
  • Parts and technical support through an established UK network

The full Ideal Heating range

We fit the whole Logic Air range, whatever size your house turns out to need. The bands below are only a rough guide to how the range maps onto real houses; the actual size comes out of the heat loss survey.

Roughly how the range maps onto real houses:

  • Small homes

Flats, bungalows and newer houses with a genuinely low heat loss.

    Typical output
    Around 4 to 6 kW
    Refrigerant
    R32
    Type
    Monobloc, all the refrigerant outside
    Hot water
    Needs a cylinder
  • The typical semi

The usual size for a three-bed semi built after about 1990.

    Typical output
    Around 8 kW
    Refrigerant
    R32
    Type
    Monobloc
    Typical pairing
180 to 210 litre unvented cylinder
  • Larger or older houses

Larger or less well-insulated homes where the survey asks for more output.

    Typical output
    10 kW and up
    Refrigerant
    R32
    Type
    Monobloc
    Note
Check the radiator schedule carefully at this size

The honest verdict

Why we fit a lot of them

  • Good value for a properly supported unit, rather than a cheap import with no back-up
  • A UK parts and technical network that predates the heat pump by a century
  • R32 is the mainstream refrigerant, so any competent engineer can work on it
  • Sensible physical size, which matters more than people expect on a narrow side passage

What to weigh up

  • The flow temperature will not rescue a house full of small radiators. If the survey comes back with a long list of radiator changes, that is the house talking, not the unit, and we will go through the options with you before anything is ordered
  • R32 has a higher global warming potential than propane, and the direction of travel is towards propane
  • Like every heat pump, it needs a cylinder, so a combi house needs somewhere to put one
  • If your heat loss survey comes back high, look hard at insulation before you size up the unit

Questions we get asked about Ideal Heating

Is an Ideal heat pump any good?

For the right house, yes. It is a well-supported R32 monobloc from a company with a long UK parts network. The question is not whether it is good, it is whether your house needs the higher flow temperature that a propane unit gives you, and that comes out of the heat loss survey.

How does it compare to Vaillant?

Vaillant's aroTHERM plus runs on propane and will carry a flow temperature up to 75°C, which saves radiator changes on older houses. The Ideal is R32 and tops out lower, but costs less. On a well-insulated house the extra headroom is money you do not need to spend.

Does it qualify for the grant?

Yes. The Logic Air is MCS listed, and we apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme voucher on your behalf and take it off the price before you pay.

Is it made in Britain?

Ideal has manufactured in Hull since 1906 and the company is still based there. That is worth something when you need a part in a hurry in February.

What size will I need?

Nobody can tell you from the outside. It comes from a room-by-room heat loss calculation done at the survey, which is the chargeable part of our heat pump process and is what the firm price is built on.
