Solar panel installers for Mansfield.

Mansfield and the Ashfield towns beside it grew on coal and textiles, and the housing shows it: 43% of homes in Mansfield are semis, against 31% across England, and most are on mains gas. A semi with a south or west-facing slope is an ideal solar roof, and a battery charged overnight makes the most of it. One thing is unusual here: one home in a hundred still heats with solid fuel, five times the English share, and those are homes where a heat pump changes the most.

Every install is MCS certified (NAP-75287), with 0% VAT on solar, batteries and heat pumps until March 2027 and the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant claimed for you.

Near Mansfield.

We cover Mansfield and everywhere around it. A few of the places nearby, and what tends to matter there.

  • Sutton-in-Ashfield

    NG17 · Ashfield District Council

Ashfield's biggest town, with a conservation area around St Mary Magdalene's church and the market place. In the Sutton Central and New Cross ward two homes in five are terraces, so one good slope of panels and a battery indoors is the usual design; the semis and detached houses out towards Kings Mill Reservoir have more roof to work with.

  • Kirkby-in-Ashfield

    NG17 · Ashfield District Council

Kirkby Cross, the old village around St Wilfrid's church, has been a conservation area since 1975, with an Article 4 direction protecting its stone walls. In the Kirkby Cross and Portland ward 36% of homes are detached and 45% of households run two or more cars, which brings an EV charger into the conversation.

  • Mansfield Woodhouse

    NG19 · Mansfield District Council

A town in its own right just north of Mansfield, with a conservation area around its old centre. In the Woodhouse ward three homes in five are semis; outside the conservation area, roof solar, a battery and an air source heat pump are permitted development on most of them.

  • Forest Town

    NG19 · Mansfield District Council

Built from 1905 as the Bolsover Colliery Company's village for Crown Farm colliery, with long terraces running off a central road and unusually generous open space. Those long, unbroken terrace roofs suit a neat row of panels; the newer estates beyond the old village are a different job, with 80% of homes in the Holly ward detached.

The houses here, and what works on them

Close to Mansfield town centre there are Victorian terraces with narrow roofs, where one good slope of panels and a battery indoors is the usual design. The Park is a conservation area of larger Victorian houses, where chimneys and mature trees mean we model the shading rather than guess. Further out, the interwar and post-war semis that make up so much of Mansfield and Ashfield have simple gables, concrete tiles and a garden with room for a heat pump.

Berry Hill and Holly are the district's most detached wards, three homes in four or more, with roofs big enough for a larger array and a second battery. A few post-war houses in the old coalfield towns were built from concrete systems rather than brick; we check how a house is built at the survey, because it changes how the panels are fixed and where a heat pump can be mounted.

Planning and conservation areas

Mansfield District Council has 11 conservation areas: The Park, Market Place, Bridge Street, West Gate, Crow Hill Drive, Nottingham Road and Terrace Road in Mansfield, plus Mansfield Woodhouse, Church Warsop, Market Warsop and Pleasley Park and Vale, which is the only one with an Article 4 direction. Ashfield has six, including Sutton in Ashfield Church and Market Place, Kirkby Cross, Hucknall and Teversal. In a conservation area, roof panels are normally still permitted development, sited to keep their effect on the street small, but panels on a wall facing the road and a heat pump on the front of the house need planning permission. We check at the survey and make the application for you if one is needed; elsewhere, roof solar, batteries and air source heat pumps are permitted development on most houses.

What the figures say about Mansfield homes.

What the public data says about homes here, and what it means for yours.

970 kWh

a year from each kW of panels

A south-facing roof at 35° in central Mansfield, after losses. An east or west roof gives about a fifth less over the year, and a battery makes better use of what it does produce by carrying the daytime surplus into the evening.

43%

of Mansfield homes are semis

Against 31.5% across England, with 42% in Ashfield. Detached houses make up 30% in both districts, rising to 74% in the Berry Hill ward and 80% in Holly, on the Forest Town side, and terraces 17% in Mansfield and 19% in Ashfield.

84%

of homes heat with mains gas alone

In both Mansfield and Ashfield, against 74% across England. Solar and a battery come first for most of them; a heat pump is the next step when the boiler is due, with the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant off the price.

1 in 100

Mansfield homes still heated by solid fuel

1.0% in Mansfield and 0.8% in Ashfield, against 0.2% across England. A heat pump replacing a solid fuel fire or boiler qualifies for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, and ends the fetching, carrying and ash.

What Mansfield homeowners ask us.

Who do you need permission from to connect solar in Mansfield?

National Grid Electricity Distribution runs the network across Mansfield and Ashfield, in its East Midlands area. A typical home system is notified to them after the install under G98; a bigger inverter or a large battery needs a G99 application first, which can take several weeks. We make the application and deal with them for you.

My house is still heated by coal or solid fuel. What would replace it?

Usually an air source heat pump, which qualifies for the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, taken off the price up front, because it replaces a fossil fuel. We size it from a room-by-room heat loss survey rather than from the old fire or boiler, and solar panels with a battery cut what it costs to run.

I live in Mansfield Woodhouse's conservation area. Can I have solar panels?

Usually, yes. Roof panels in a conservation area are normally still permitted development, sited to keep their effect on the street small, and there is no Article 4 direction in Mansfield Woodhouse. Panels on a wall facing the road, a heat pump on the front of the house and anything on a listed building need consent. We check your house against the council's map at the survey and, if consent is needed, prepare and submit the application.

Is a former Coal Board house all right for solar?

Most are ordinary brick semis and terraces, and they make good solar homes. A few post-war houses were built from concrete systems, and on those we check the roof structure and how anything is fixed to the walls before we design the system. It is part of the survey, not an extra visit.

Do you cover the villages around Mansfield?

Yes: Mansfield, Ashfield and the Sherwood villages, including Warsop, Rainworth, Clipstone, Edwinstowe and Blidworth. Nottingham has a page of its own. We fit anywhere in the country, so if your postcode is not listed, put it in anyway.
