Solar panel installers for Harrogate.

Harrogate is a Victorian spa town of stone villas and terraces, with much of its centre in one large conservation area and its own planning rule for houses that look onto The Stray. Around it, the gas main runs out quickly: one home in ten in the former Harrogate district heats with oil or LPG, and in some rural wards it is nearly half. The houses are often big and the roofs are good, so the questions here are usually about planning and heat pumps rather than whether solar will work.

Every install is MCS certified (NAP-75287), with 0% VAT on solar, batteries and heat pumps until March 2027 and the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant claimed for you.

What Harrogate's housing means for solar and heat pumps

Central Harrogate is stone villas, terraces and converted flats: in Valley Gardens and Central Harrogate ward a third of homes are flats and one in five is heated by electricity alone, which is where a battery on a cheap overnight tariff earns its place. The big Victorian houses of the Duchy and Harlow have slate roofs, chimneys and mature trees, so we model the shading rather than guess, and the panels often sit on a rear slope.

Bilton, New Park and Starbeck are semis and terraces, over 80% on mains gas: simple roofs for panels and a battery, and a heat pump when the boiler goes. Out in the villages the houses get bigger and the gas runs out, and in Ouseburn and Washburn wards oil is the commonest fuel, which makes a heat pump the main conversation.

Planning and conservation areas

North Yorkshire Council has been the planning authority since April 2023 and keeps the former district's 53 conservation areas. Parts of the Harrogate conservation area have Article 4 directions: on The Stray, solar and PV panels on roofs visible from The Stray need planning permission, and another direction controls painting. Listed buildings need listed building consent for panels whatever the direction says.

Elsewhere, being in a conservation area changes what needs consent rather than ruling solar out. Outside conservation areas and listed buildings, roof solar, batteries and air source heat pumps are permitted development on most houses. We check the council's map at the survey and make the application for you if one is needed.

948 kWh

a year from each kW of panels

A south-facing roof at 35° in Harrogate, after losses. An east or west roof gives about a fifth less over the year, and a battery makes better use of what it does produce by moving the daytime surplus into the evening.

7.9%

of homes in the former Harrogate district heat with oil alone

Plus 2.4% on tank or bottled gas. In the rural wards it is far higher: 46% in Ouseburn and a third in Washburn and Birstwith and in Masham and Fountains. Those homes qualify for the higher £9,000 grant.

32% with two and 11% with three or more, against 30% in York. With a third of homes detached, an EV charger often goes in alongside the panels and battery.

Near Harrogate.

We cover Harrogate and everywhere around it. A few of the places nearby, and what tends to matter there.

  • Knaresborough

    HG5 · North Yorkshire Council

The castle and the railway viaduct over the Nidd sit in Knaresborough's conservation area, so panels on an older stone house near the centre are checked first. Across the town's two wards over 80% of homes are on mains gas, and semis are the commonest house in Knaresborough East.

  • Pannal

    HG3 · North Yorkshire Council

A village on Harrogate's southern edge with its own conservation area. Oatlands and Pannal ward is 54% detached and 85% on mains gas: big roofs that often take a larger array, and a battery to match.

  • Spofforth

    HG3 · North Yorkshire Council

A village beside the ruins of Spofforth Castle, with its own conservation area, in a ward where 15% of homes heat with oil and 5% with tank or bottled gas. The farmhouses and bigger homes off the gas main are strong heat pump candidates.

  • Ripon

    HG4 · North Yorkshire Council

A cathedral city with its own conservation area, where around 80% of homes are on mains gas. Parts of Ripon sit over gypsum that dissolves and can open sinkholes, so an air source heat pump is the sensible choice here rather than a ground source borehole.

Your questions, answered for Harrogate.

Who do you need permission from to connect solar in Harrogate?

Northern Powergrid runs the network across Harrogate, Knaresborough and Ripon. A typical home system is notified to them after the install under G98; a bigger inverter or a large battery needs a G99 application first, which can take several weeks. We make the application and deal with them; you do not need to contact them yourself.

My house looks onto The Stray. Can I have solar panels?

Often yes, but an Article 4 direction means panels on a roof slope visible from The Stray need planning permission, and a listed house needs listed building consent as well. A rear slope out of sight of The Stray is usually the simpler route. We check your house at the survey and, if consent is needed, prepare and submit the application.

Is a heat pump worth it in a village with no gas?

That is where it makes most sense. One home in ten in the former Harrogate district heats with oil or LPG, and nearly half in Ouseburn ward. Oil and LPG cost more per unit of heat than a heat pump does to run, and a home coming off them gets the higher £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, taken off the price up front. We size it from a room-by-room heat loss survey, not from the size of your current boiler.

We have two cars. Is an EV charger worth adding?

If one of them is electric, or will be, usually yes. More than two in five households in the former Harrogate district run two cars or more, and a charger set to the cheap overnight hours, or to your own panels in the day, costs far less per mile than a public charger.

Do you cover Knaresborough, Ripon and the villages?

Yes: Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon, Boroughbridge, Masham, Pateley Bridge and the villages between them. We fit anywhere in the country, so if your postcode is just outside, put it in anyway.
