Solar panel installers for Barnsley.

Barnsley grew on coal, and its housing still follows the pits: semis and terraces in the town and the old mining villages, which between them make up two-thirds of the borough's homes, nearly all on mains gas. That makes panels and a battery the usual starting point, with a heat pump when the boiler is due. To the west the borough climbs towards the Pennines and the houses get bigger and more exposed; in the town centre a tenth of homes are heated by electricity alone. This page gives the figures for each.

Every install is MCS certified (NAP-75287), with 0% VAT on solar, batteries and heat pumps until March 2027 and the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant claimed for you.

Near Barnsley.

We cover Barnsley and everywhere around it. A few of the places nearby, and what tends to matter there.

  • Wombwell

    S73 · Barnsley Council

A former mining town in the Dearne valley, east of Barnsley. Wombwell ward is 48% semis and 29% terraced, and a quarter of households have no car, so a battery on a smart tariff often comes before an EV charger; the back garden is usually the place for a heat pump.

  • Cudworth

    S72 · Barnsley Council

North-east of the town, with Carlton's conservation area close by. Cudworth ward is 45% semis, 27% terraced and 22% detached, and 83% of homes are on mains gas, so most homes here start with panels and a battery and add a heat pump when the boiler is due.

  • Mapplewell

    S75 · Barnsley Council

With Staincross, on the high ground north of the town. Darton East ward, which covers both, is 36% detached and 87% on mains gas, and only 16% of households have no car, so an EV charger often goes in alongside the panels and battery.

958 kWh

a year from each kW of panels

A south-facing roof at 35° in central Barnsley, after losses. An east or west roof gives about a fifth less over the year, and a battery makes better use of what it does produce by carrying the daytime surplus into the evening.

69%

of homes are semis or terraces

45.5% semi-detached and 23.3% terraced, against 31.5% and 23% across England, with 23.4% detached. Kingstone ward, just west of the centre, is half terraced; St Helens is 75% semis.

82%

of homes heated by mains gas alone

82.1%, against 74% across England, and only 0.7% on oil. For most homes here a heat pump replaces a gas boiler, with the standard £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, and panels with a battery help keep its running cost down.

1 in 10

town centre homes heated by electricity alone

10.1% in Central ward, three times the borough's 3.4%, where 21% of homes are purpose-built flats. Where there is a roof of your own, a battery charged on a cheap overnight tariff is the biggest saving for an electrically heated home.

Roofs, walls and gardens in Barnsley

The terraces around the town centre, in Kingstone, Old Town and Worsbrough Common, have narrower roofs where one slope of eight to ten panels is typical, with the inverter in the loft and the battery under the stairs or in the back kitchen. Some of the older ones are stone with slate roofs, which take slate hooks rather than tile brackets. In Central ward a third of households have no car, so a battery and the right overnight tariff do more than an EV charger.

The semis of St Helens, Monk Bretton and Stairfoot (59–75% semis) and the mining villages east of the town are the borough's easiest roofs: simple gables, concrete tiles and a garden with room for a heat pump. To the west, Dodworth and Darton are over a third detached, and as the ground climbs towards the Pennines the houses get more exposed, so wind loading on the panel fixings is part of the design there.

Planning and conservation areas

Barnsley Council has 18 conservation areas, including three in the town centre (Regent Street, Church Street and Market Hill; Victoria Road; and Huddersfield Road), Worsbrough, Darfield, Carlton, Cawthorne, Elsecar and Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park. In a conservation area, roof panels are normally still permitted development, but panels on a wall facing the road and a heat pump on a wall or roof facing the road need planning permission. A small western corner of the borough, around Dunford Bridge, is inside the Peak District National Park, where the National Park Authority is the planning authority and the same limits apply. Elsewhere, roof solar, batteries and air source heat pumps are permitted development on most houses; we check at the survey and make the application for you if one is needed.

Before you book: Barnsley questions.

Who runs the electricity network in Barnsley?

Northern Powergrid covers the whole borough, from Royston and Darton to Wombwell, Hoyland and the Dearne. A typical home system is notified to them after the install under G98; a bigger inverter or a large battery needs a G99 application first, which can take several weeks. We make the application and deal with them; you do not need to contact them yourself.

I live in Worsbrough's conservation area. Can I still have solar panels?

Usually yes. In the conservation area, roof panels are normally still permitted development, but panels on a wall facing the road, or a heat pump on a wall or roof facing the road, need planning permission, and a listed building needs listed building consent. Rear slopes are often fine. We check your house against Barnsley Council's map at the survey and, if consent is needed, prepare and submit the application.

Will a heat pump work in a stone terrace?

Yes, if it is designed for the house. Solid stone walls lose more heat than cavity walls, so the heat loss survey matters more than on a modern semi, and some rooms may need a larger radiator. The outdoor unit usually goes in the back yard, and we check it meets the MCS noise standard at the neighbours' windows so it stays within permitted development.

My house is off the gas, out to the west. Is a heat pump worth it?

That is where it makes most sense. Oil and LPG cost more per unit of heat than a heat pump does to run, and a home coming off either gets the higher £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, taken off the price up front. We size it from a room-by-room heat loss survey, not from the old boiler.

Do you cover the whole of Barnsley?

Yes: the town and every part of the borough, including Wombwell, Cudworth, Mapplewell, Royston, Darton, Dodworth, Darfield, Grimethorpe, Goldthorpe and Thurnscoe. Penistone and Hoyland are on our Sheffield page, and Rotherham and Doncaster have pages of their own. We fit anywhere in the country, so if your postcode is just outside, put it in anyway.
