Solar panel installers for Rotherham.

Rotherham is semi-detached country: nearly half the borough's homes are semis, more than anywhere else in South Yorkshire and well above the 31.5% across England. Most of them sit on simple gable roofs with a garden behind, and 83% of homes are heated by mains gas alone, so solar with a battery is the usual starting point here, with a heat pump when the boiler is due. Out east, around Dinnington and the Anstons, the villages thin out from the gas main and the answer starts to change.

Every install is MCS certified (NAP-75287), with 0% VAT on solar, batteries and heat pumps until March 2027 and the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant claimed for you.

Near Rotherham.

We cover Rotherham and everywhere around it. A few of the places nearby, and what tends to matter there.

  • Wickersley

S66 · Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council

A village east of the town with a conservation area over its old centre. Wickersley North ward is 56% semis and 85% on mains gas, and only one household in five has no car, so panels, a battery and an EV charger on the drive often go in together.

  • Rawmarsh

S62 · Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council

On the hill above Parkgate, north of the town. Rawmarsh East ward is 55% semis but 30% of households have no car, so a battery on a cheap overnight tariff usually comes before an EV charger; Rawmarsh West has more detached houses (19%) and more drives.

  • Kimberworth

S61 · Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council

On the ridge west of the town centre, above the Don valley. Rotherham West ward, which takes in Kimberworth, is 46% semis and 27% terraced, and Kimberworth Park, in Keppel ward, 54% semis. Hillside streets mean plenty of east and west-facing roofs, which still give about four-fifths of a south one.

  • Maltby

S66 · Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council

A former pit town at the borough's eastern edge, where Maltby Main closed in 2013, with the ruins of Roche Abbey just to the south-east. Maltby East ward is 40% terraced, while Hellaby & Maltby West is 45% detached, so the roofs here run from a single terrace slope to a large detached house with room for a bigger array.

The houses here, and what works on them

The borough's interwar and post-war semis are its easiest solar roofs: simple gables, concrete tiles and a garden with room for a heat pump. Sitwell ward, which takes in Moorgate and Whiston, is 69% semis, Dalton & Thrybergh 67% and Brinsworth 66%. Bramley & Ravenfield and Hellaby & Maltby West are nearly half detached, with bigger roofs and drives, and that is where a larger array, a second battery and an EV charger fit naturally.

Closer to the centre, Boston Castle ward has 22% purpose-built flats, nearly 10% of homes heated by electricity alone and a third of households without a car; for anyone there with a roof of their own, a battery charged on a cheap overnight tariff cuts the bill the most. Out east, Anston & Woodsetts is 39% detached and 2% on oil, and the stone cottages in the villages around it lose more heat than a modern semi, so a heat pump there is sized from a room-by-room heat loss survey rather than from the old boiler.

Planning and conservation areas

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council has 28 conservation areas, including Rotherham Town Centre, Moorgate, Wickersley, Whiston, Wentworth, Greasbrough, Thorpe Hesley, Wath-upon-Dearne, Swinton, North and South Anston, and Laughton-en-le-Morthen, and Wentworth Woodhouse and many of the estate buildings around it are listed. In a conservation area, roof panels are normally still permitted development, but panels on a wall facing the road and a heat pump on a wall or roof facing the road need planning permission, and a listed building needs listed building consent. Outside those, roof solar, batteries and air source heat pumps are permitted development on most houses in the borough; we check the council's map at the survey and make the application for you if one is needed.

What the figures say about Rotherham homes.

What the public data says about homes here, and what it means for yours.

952 kWh

a year from each kW of panels

A south-facing roof at 35° in central Rotherham, after losses. An east or west roof gives about a fifth less over the year, and a battery makes better use of what it does produce by moving the daytime surplus into the evening.

49%

of Rotherham homes are semis

49.2%, against 38% in Sheffield and 31.5% across England, with 22% detached and 18% terraced. A semi usually has one good main slope for panels, a loft for the inverter and a side or back wall for a heat pump.

83%

of homes heated by mains gas alone

82.8%, against 74% across England, and only 3.3% heated by electricity alone. For most homes here a heat pump replaces a gas boiler, with the standard £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, and solar with a battery helps keep its running cost down.

4%

of Dinnington ward homes on oil or LPG

2.9% on oil and 1.1% on tank or bottled gas, against 0.5% on oil across the borough. The villages around Dinnington, the Anstons and Woodsetts are where a heat pump replaces the dearest heat, with the higher £9,000 grant for homes coming off oil or LPG.

What Rotherham homeowners ask us.

Who runs the electricity network in Rotherham?

Northern Powergrid covers the whole borough, from Wath and Swinton to Maltby, Dinnington and Aston. A typical home system is notified to them after the install under G98; a bigger inverter or a large battery needs a G99 application first, which can take several weeks. We make the application and deal with them; you do not need to contact them yourself.

I live in Wickersley's conservation area. Can I still have solar panels?

Usually yes. In the conservation area, roof panels are normally still permitted development, but panels on a wall facing the road, or a heat pump on a wall or roof facing the road, need planning permission, and a listed building needs listed building consent. We check your house against the council's map at the survey and, if consent is needed, prepare and submit the application.

I have a gas boiler in a semi. Is a heat pump worth it?

It can be, if the house suits one. The standard £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant comes off the price up front, and running costs depend mostly on how well the system is designed and which tariff you are on, which is why panels and a battery pair well with it. We size it from a room-by-room heat loss survey and tell you plainly if your house is not ready for one yet.

I live in a village off the gas, out past Dinnington. What makes sense?

Usually a heat pump, with panels to help run it. Oil and LPG cost more per unit of heat than a heat pump does to run, and a home coming off either gets the higher £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, taken off the price up front.

Do you cover the whole of Rotherham?

Yes: the town and every part of the borough, including Wickersley, Bramley, Rawmarsh, Kimberworth, Maltby, Wath, Swinton, Dinnington, the Anstons, Aston and Thurcroft. Sheffield, Doncaster and Barnsley have pages of their own. We fit anywhere in the country, so if your postcode is just outside, put it in anyway.
