Solar panel installers for Doncaster.

Doncaster is flat, open country by South Yorkshire standards, and it shows in the figures: a south-facing roof here produces more than in Sheffield, Rotherham or Barnsley, and hills shading a roof are rare. Most homes are semis on mains gas, so solar with a battery is the usual starting point. The low ground along the Don and out towards Thorne brings flood risk into the design, and the villages north and west of the city bring oil into the heating conversation.

Every install is MCS certified (NAP-75287), with 0% VAT on solar, batteries and heat pumps until March 2027 and the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant claimed for you.

What Doncaster's housing means for solar and heat pumps

Bessacarr, Sprotbrough and Tickhill have the borough's biggest houses: Bessacarr ward is 37% detached, Sprotbrough 46% and Tickhill & Wadsworth 50%, often with hipped roofs that split the panels over two or three slopes, and drives with room for an EV charger. Wheatley Hills & Intake and Roman Ridge are two-thirds semis, the classic solar-and-battery roof with a heat pump as the next step. The Victorian terraces of Hexthorpe and Balby North (47% terraced) have narrower roofs, and 42% of households there have no car, so a battery and the right tariff usually come first.

The former pit villages, Edlington, Adwick, Carcroft, Armthorpe and Rossington among them, are mostly semis with long gardens and simple roofs, though some colliery-era houses are of non-traditional construction, which we check before fixing anything to them. Further out, the villages around Askern and Norton, and Barnburgh and its neighbours in Sprotbrough ward, are where oil and LPG still heat a noticeable share of homes and a heat pump makes the biggest difference.

Planning and conservation areas

City of Doncaster Council has 46 conservation areas, including Bawtry, Tickhill, Sprotbrough, Conisbrough, Bessacarr, Hatfield, Thorne and Arksey, and several in the city centre around the Market Place, High Street, St George's, South Parade and Thorne Road. In a conservation area, roof panels are normally still permitted development, but panels on a wall facing the road and a heat pump on a wall or roof facing the road need planning permission. Outside conservation areas and listed buildings, roof solar, batteries and air source heat pumps are permitted development on most houses in the borough; we check the council's map at the survey and make the application for you if one is needed.

Parts of the borough along the Don, the Went and the Torne, and the low ground around Thorne and Fishlake, are at risk of flooding. That does not stop you having a battery or a heat pump, but it changes where they go: raised, and never in a garage or outbuilding that has flooded before.

980 kWh

a year from each kW of panels

A south-facing roof at 35° in central Doncaster, after losses, the highest of the four South Yorkshire boroughs. An east or west roof gives about a fifth less, and a battery makes better use of what it does produce by carrying the daytime surplus into the evening.

70%

of homes are semis or detached

45.5% semi-detached and 24.1% detached, against 31.5% and 22.9% across England, with 21% terraced. Detached houses rise to 46% in Sprotbrough ward and 62% in Finningley, where bigger roofs take bigger arrays.

9%

of Norton & Askern ward homes on oil or LPG

5.7% on oil and 3.6% on tank or bottled gas, with Sprotbrough ward close behind at 5.6% and 2.0%, against 0.9% on oil across the borough. Those villages are where a heat pump replaces the dearest heat, with the higher £9,000 grant for homes coming off oil or LPG.

13%

of Town ward homes heated by electricity alone

13.0%, against 3.8% across the borough, with 20% of homes in the ward purpose-built flats. Where there is a roof of your own, a battery charged on a cheap overnight tariff is the biggest saving for an electrically heated home.

Near Doncaster.

We cover Doncaster and everywhere around it. A few of the places nearby, and what tends to matter there.

  • Bentley

DN5 · City of Doncaster Council

North of the Don, and flooded in 2007 and again in 2019. Bentley ward, which takes in Arksey and Toll Bar, is 34% terraced, so the usual job is one slope of panels; we check the flood map first and put the battery and inverter where floodwater would not reach them, sometimes upstairs rather than in the garage.

  • Armthorpe

DN3 · City of Doncaster Council

A former pit village east of the city, with newer estates on its edges. Armthorpe ward is 53% semis and 22% detached, and 5.1% of homes are heated by electricity alone, above the borough's 3.8%; for those, a battery on an overnight tariff comes first.

  • Rossington

DN11 · City of Doncaster Council

A former colliery village south-east of the city, now beside the Great Yorkshire Way, with newer estates going up around it. Rossington & Bawtry ward is 41% semis and 31% detached; the newest houses usually want a battery and an EV charger more than more panels.

  • Thorne

DN8 · City of Doncaster Council

A market town on the flat Humberhead Levels north-east of the city, beside the Stainforth and Keadby Canal, with a conservation area over its centre. Thorne & Moorends ward is half semis, and with so much low-lying land around it, the flood map is part of deciding where a battery goes.

Your questions, answered for Doncaster.

Who runs the electricity network in Doncaster?

Northern Powergrid covers the whole borough, from Askern and Thorne to Bawtry, Rossington and Conisbrough. A typical home system is notified to them after the install under G98; a bigger inverter or a large battery needs a G99 application first, which can take several weeks. We make the application and deal with them; you do not need to contact them yourself.

My house in Bentley flooded in 2019. Can I still have a battery?

Yes. The battery and inverter go where floodwater would not reach them, which in a house that has flooded usually means upstairs, a raised wall position or a first-floor cupboard rather than the garage or under the stairs. Panels on the roof are unaffected. We check the flood map for your address at the survey and design around it.

I live in Bawtry or Tickhill's conservation area. Can I still have solar panels?

Usually yes. In a conservation area, roof panels are normally still permitted development, but panels on a wall facing the road, or a heat pump on a wall or roof facing the road, need planning permission, and a listed building needs listed building consent. Rear slopes are often fine. We check your house against the council's map at the survey and, if consent is needed, prepare and submit the application.

Is a heat pump worth it in a village on oil, around Askern or Sprotbrough?

That is where it makes most sense. Oil and LPG cost more per unit of heat than a heat pump does to run, and a home coming off either gets the higher £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, taken off the price up front. We size it from a room-by-room heat loss survey, not from the size of your current boiler.

Do you cover the whole of Doncaster?

Yes: the city and every part of the borough, including Bentley, Armthorpe, Rossington, Thorne, Hatfield, Askern, Bawtry, Tickhill, Conisbrough and Edlington. Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley have pages of their own. We fit anywhere in the country, so if your postcode is just outside, put it in anyway.
