Solar panel installers for Hull.

Hull is a city of terraces: nearly half its homes are terraced, more than any other kind of house, and most of them stand on flat land below the level of a high tide. That shapes the job here. The roof is usually simple, and the thinking goes into where the battery and inverter go. Out in the East Riding the houses get bigger, a third of them detached, and in the Wolds and Holderness villages oil heating is common, which turns the conversation towards heat pumps. This page covers both, with the figures for each area rather than one number for the whole.

Every install is MCS certified (NAP-75287), with 0% VAT on solar, batteries and heat pumps until March 2027 and the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant claimed for you.

Around Hull.

We cover Hull and everywhere around it. A few of the places nearby, and what tends to matter there.

  • Beverley

HU17 · East Riding of Yorkshire Council

The Minster town, with ten conservation areas of its own, the Minster Area, North Bar Within and the Westwood Area among them. Panels on an older house near the centre are checked against the map first; the newer estates out towards Molescroft are usually straightforward.

  • Hessle

HU13 · East Riding of Yorkshire Council

At the north end of the Humber Bridge, in a ward where 85% of homes are on mains gas and terraces and semis make up 70% of the housing. Streets in the Hessle Town conservation area get a planning check; most of the rest is a standard solar and battery job.

  • Cottingham

HU16 · East Riding of Yorkshire Council

Often claimed as England's largest village, with its own conservation area. Around 40% of homes in its two wards are semis and over 80% are on mains gas: the classic house for panels and a battery now and a heat pump when the boiler goes.

  • Willerby

HU10 · East Riding of Yorkshire Council

Willerby and Kirk Ella ward is 87% mains gas, nearly half semis and a third detached, and only one household in nine has no car. An EV charger usually goes in alongside the panels and battery here.

  • Hornsea

HU18 · East Riding of Yorkshire Council

A seaside town beside Hornsea Mere, with its own conservation area. In North Holderness ward 5% of homes heat with oil and 2% with tank or bottled gas, and close to the sea we use fixings rated for coastal exposure.

  • Bransholme

    HU7 · Hull City Council

Built mainly in the late 1960s and 1970s on the city's northern edge as one of the largest council estates in the country. In North Carr and West Carr, the wards that take in most of it, about half of homes are terraced and over 80% are on mains gas: simple roofs that suit solar and a battery.

  • Goole

DN14 · East Riding of Yorkshire Council

The port town the Aire and Calder Navigation built in the 1820s, low-lying beside the tidal Ouse. Goole South ward is nearly half terraced, and we check the flood map before deciding where a battery goes.

Hull homes, and what suits them

The long terraces off Hessle Road, Holderness Road, Beverley Road and Newland Avenue have narrow roofs, often split by a rear outrigger. One good slope with eight to ten panels is typical and the inverter goes in the loft. In a city this low-lying the battery goes on a wall rather than the floor, and in a ground-floor flat or a house that has flooded before we talk through the options with you before anything is fitted.

The semis and short terraces of Orchard Park, Bransholme, Longhill and Derringham are the city's easiest roofs: mostly simple gables, concrete tiles and a garden with room for a heat pump. Kingswood, newer still on the northern edge, is 40% detached, and newer houses often arrive with a small array already fitted, so the gain is in a battery and an EV charger.

A third of Hull households have no car, against one in six in the East Riding, so an EV charger is mostly an East Riding conversation. One Hull home in fourteen is heated by electricity alone, rising to a quarter in St Andrew's and Docklands, where flats make up nearly half the housing; those homes gain most from a battery charged on a cheap overnight tariff.

Planning and conservation areas

Hull City Council has 27 conservation areas, from the Old Town and Georgian New Town in the centre to the Avenues, Garden Village and Sutton Village. The Avenues and Pearson Park conservation area has an Article 4 direction that names solar panels, roof alterations and chimneys, so panels there need planning permission, and Garden Village's direction covers roof alterations. We check the council's map at the survey and make the application for you if one is needed.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has 109 conservation areas, including ten in Beverley and others covering the centres of Cottingham, Hessle, Hornsea and Goole. Outside conservation areas and listed buildings, roof solar, batteries and air source heat pumps are permitted development on most houses in the city and the East Riding.

Questions from Hull.

Who do you need permission from to connect solar in Hull?

Northern Powergrid runs the network across Hull and the East Riding. A typical home system is notified to them after the install under G98; a bigger inverter or a large battery needs a G99 application first, which can take several weeks. We make the application and deal with them; you do not need to contact them yourself.

I live on the Avenues. Can I still have solar panels?

Often yes, but the Avenues and Pearson Park conservation area has an Article 4 direction that specifically covers solar panels, so panels that would be permitted development elsewhere in the city need planning permission there. We check what the direction means for your house at the survey and, if consent is needed, prepare and submit the application.

Is a heat pump worth it in an East Riding village with no gas?

That is where it makes most sense. Nearly a quarter of homes in Wolds Weighton ward heat with oil, and oil and LPG cost more per unit of heat than a heat pump does to run. A home coming off oil or LPG gets the higher £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, taken off the price up front. We size it from a room-by-room heat loss survey, not from the size of your current boiler.

I have a terrace in Hull. What works best?

Usually panels on the best slope and a battery charged on a cheap overnight tariff, mounted on a wall well above the floor. Over 90% of the city lies below the high tide level, so we plan the battery's position first, and if you have no drive a battery still pays its way without an EV charger.

Do you cover the whole of Hull and the East Riding?

Yes: the city and the East Riding around it, including Beverley, Cottingham, Hessle, Hedon, Hornsea, Withernsea, Driffield, Bridlington and Goole. We fit anywhere in the country, so if your postcode is just outside, put it in anyway.

What the public data says about homes here, and what it means for yours.

996 kWh

a year from each kW of panels

A south-facing roof at 35° in Hull, after losses. An east or west roof gives between a fifth and a quarter less over the year, and a battery makes better use of what it does produce by moving the daytime surplus into the evening.

47%

of Hull homes are terraced

Against 19% in the East Riding, where 35% of homes are detached and another 36% are semis. A terrace usually means one good roof slope, eight to ten panels and a battery fitted inside rather than on a drive.

Over 90%

of the city lies below the high tide level

Hull's own figure. It is why we decide where the battery and inverter go before we look at the roof: on a wall well above the floor, or upstairs where the product allows, rather than on a garage floor.

5.8%

of East Riding homes heat with oil alone

Plus 1.6% on tank or bottled gas, against none on oil in the city. In the rural wards it is far higher: 24% in Wolds Weighton and 17% in Howdenshire and East Wolds and Coastal. Those homes qualify for the higher £9,000 grant.
